    Hakone Gardens expands gift shop

    The gift shop at Hakone Gardens, located at 21000 Big Basin Way in Saratoga, has completed its expansion after months of renovations and is now double its previous size.

    The shop, managed by volunteer Elaine Salter, carries Japanese books, Japanese porcelain, antique lacquer products, gifts crafted from bamboo, dolls, incense, feng shui items, silk scarves, kimonos, freshwater pearl jewelry and kitchenware used in the preparation of Japanese cuisine.     Band performs Spring Concert

    The Saratoga Community Band, whose 100 members include both amateur and professional musicians, will perform its annual Spring Concert April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the campus theater at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga.

    Conducted by Craig D. Northrup, the band will play overtures, marches, light classics and popular music. Joining them is guest soprano soloist Susan Parks, former star of Beach Blanket Babylon, who will be singing selections from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story.

    Admission is free. Early arrival is recommended, as this annual concert is always standing room only. The Saratoga Community Band welcomes new musicians; the band performs several concerts each year, as well as playing at many special events and civic activities.     Outdoorsman visits REI

    Continuing its tradition of organizing programs and workshops, REI Saratoga hosts Tim Keating of Sierra Wilderness Seminars March 19 at 7 p.m. The experienced outdoorsman will give a slide presentation on climbing and skiing opportunities on the 14,162-foot Mount Shasta, in Northern California. He will also share up-to-date information on climbing conditions, glacier routes and ski descents, and will review the skills and gear needed for a safe and fun experience.

    The event is free and open to people of all ages. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 408.871.8765.
