Seniors can learn about their bone density with test
The Foundation for Osteoporosis Research and Education (FORE) invites all senior citizens in the Saratoga and Los Gatos area to take part in a bone density screening on March 9, from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Longs Drugs at 12940 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road in Saratoga. The test is a noninvasive, painless scan of the forearm that takes seven minutes and uses an extremely small amount of x-ray. The bone-testing machine is called a pDEXA and is used on a rotating basis throughout Central and Northern California.
No appointments are necessary. Technicians perform the screenings on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the test is $30, with proceeds supporting the FORE bone density testing program. Call 510.832.2663 for more information.
Senior Friends can get advice from pharmacist
Good Samaritan Hospital, at 2425 Samaritan Drive at the San Jose/Los Gatos border, encourages all interested local senior citizens in the West Valley area to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone 50 and older. The seniors in Good Sam's growing group take part in months filled with activities, outings and informational programs. Some are free; others have small fees.
One of the more popular events, Ask-A-Pharmacist, takes place March 26, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the hospital lobby. A pharmacist will be available to review medications, discuss possible side effects and drug interactions and provide instructions and tips on proper use.
Other Senior Friends activities include exercise programs, lectures, workshops, movies, theater performances, a Lunch Bunch, mature driving courses and cooking classes. Membership is $15 per year. For more information, call 408.559.2555.
