Day trip to a popular sticker factory planned
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations now for a bus trip to Petaluma on April 6, from 7:45 a.m. to 530 p.m. The first stop is a tour of Mrs. Grossman's state-of-the-art sticker factory; Mrs. Grossman's are among the country's most popular stickers. Afterwards is a hosted lunch at the historic 1888 River House Restaurant, with choice of entree. Following lunch is a visit to California's largest adobe house at Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Adults of all ages are welcome. Cost is $84 per person. Space is limited; call 408.868.1248, or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
San Jose Wind Symphony to play in Saratoga
The San Jose Wind Symphony will perform a concert at the West Valley College theater on March 11, at 3 p.m. The featured guest artist is Rufus Olivier, principal bassoonist for the orchestras of both the San Francisco Opera and the San Francisco Ballet. Local residents Judy Bingman and Josh Gies will also perform with the wind symphony on alto saxophone and percussion, respectively. Bingman is retired from Los Gatos High School, where she led the Wildcat Marching Band.
The San Jose Wind Symphony consists of professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians, and is conducted by its founder, Darrell Johnston. Call 408.927.7597.
Singers invited to audition for annual scholarship awards
The 31st annual Henry & Maria Hold Memorial Scholarship Fund auditions take place on April 29, at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. The competition, established in 1979, in memory of the founders of the West Bay Opera, is open to all California singers between the ages of 18 and 26 who are interested in pursuing an operatic career. A total of $4,250 in cash awards is available.
