Saratoga hires an interim city clerk

The city hired Carol Butler to be Saratoga's interim city clerk, replacing Susan Ramos, who resigned last month.

Butler worked as city clerk for 30 of her 34 years with the city of Sunnyvale. She retired last July and does not wish to be a candidate for the permanent position here. According to administrative services director Mary Jo Walker, the city is in the process of recruiting a permanent clerk.

    Peninsular Railway subject of meeting

"Saratoga's not-so-rapid transit" will be the topic at the Saratoga Historical Foundation meeting March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Library.

Program chairman Willys Peck will present a slide show and talk on the Peninsular Railway, the interurban car line that served Saratoga from 1904 to 1933.

Gift spurs push for child abuse center

A Saratoga couple who wish to stay anonymous donated $1 million to create a 24-hour center for abused children. The center would incorporate health care, social services and law enforcement, and would be located at the county's public hospital, Valley Medical Center.

Today, children are taken to multiple agencies for interviews and examinations. The Child Advocacy Center would allow children to see doctors, police, social workers and prosecutors under one roof, which may make the process less traumatic.

Santa Clara County supervisors were spurred by the couple's action to indicate on Feb. 29 that they may help fund such a center, as well.

Meeting on trail access for cyclists

Facing growing public concern and maintenance costs, the Midpeninsula Open Space District (MROSD) meets on March 9 to discuss closing a portion of the district's trails to mountain-bike users.

Hikers and equestrians have complained about the limited opportunities to enjoy a tranquil hike or ride on the district's open space preserve trails.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Los Altos Youth Center on North San Antonio Road. For more information call 650.691.1200.
