Festival benefits Social Advocates for Youth Rivers of Chocolate expected to flow
Rivers of chocolate will flow in the hills of Saratoga March 21 during Social Advocates for Youth's (SAY) third annual Rivers of Chocolate Festival, an afternoon of food, drinks, entertainment and--of course--chocolate, held at the Mountain Winery. Each year, the festival takes its theme from one of the world's great rivers. This year's theme highlights the Seine and Paris.
Chefs and representatives from numerous Bay Area restaurants, caterers and confectioneries will offer chocolate creations at individual tasting stations.
Among the participants are Sweet Pea's of Los Gatos; Chateau La Cresta, The Plumed Horse, Sent Sovi and Viaggio of Saratoga; Caribbean Kitchen, Paolo's and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme of San Jose; Donna Did It and The Palace of Sunnyvale; Chez TJ of Mountain View.
Also participating are Rick's Rather Rich Ice Cream of Palo Alto; Mission Valley Coffee Roasting of Fremont; The Left Bank of Menlo Park; and Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker of San Francisco. Complementing the sweets are hors d'oeuvres and wine. A silent auction will also take place.
SAY is a non-profit organization, established in 1973 to meet crisis needs of Santa Clara County children, teenagers and families. SAY's mission is to provide services that teach resiliency, self-respect, responsibility and healthy social interactions. SAY operates six programs serving all of Santa Clara County:
* Casa SAY, which offers temporary food, shelter, counseling and casework for runaways and homeless youths;
* Safe Place programs in seven South Bay cities are the outreach arm of Casa SAY. Local businesses provide safe places for youths to go until a SAY counselor arrives;
* Our Youth and Family Counseling Center offers outpatient and school-based counseling services to help divert youths from gangs and criminal activity, improve peer relations and help parents manage their children;
* Drug prevention staff offer community-based counseling, parent education and support groups and gang prevention activities. It also assists families to deal with drug and alcohol-related issues;
* Independent Living Skills staff provide training, counseling and support for Dependents of the Court, to prepare them for their independence at age 18.
* Restorative Justice Program diversion activities and services help youth who have committed misdemeanors and have contracted with a Neighborhood Accountability Board to make amends to the community.
Admission to Rivers of Chocolate is $50 per person. For tickets or information, call 253-3540.
