    Bogus solicitations under investigation

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department is investigating possible illegal solicitations in Saratoga from a group claiming to be a "Junior Police Academy Program."

So far, only one call has been reported. In that call, the person told sheriff officials that the caller asked for a $1,000 donation to place police officers in elementary and middle schools for additional security.

Sheriff officials say they know of no such organization, and say they are investigating the legitimacy of the program.

Officials at the Sheriff's Westside Substation in Saratoga would like to hear about any other solicitations. Call 867-9715.

    Time to think about summer

The city of Saratoga is hiring recreation leaders for upcoming summer camps.

Positions include Recreation Leaders I-III, and depend on experience, knowledge of the positions and abilities. Pay for the positions depends on leadership level, and ranges from $5.25 to $8.25 an hour.

To apply, pick up a city application from City Hall's administrative services department, located at 13777 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. For more information, call 868-1200.

City needs to fill commission seats

Saratoga has vacancies on two city commissions--the Planning Commission and the Youth Commission--that need to be filled soon.

The city's Youth Commission has nine vacancies, left by students whose terms expire in July. The nine seats are available to any resident of Saratoga who is entering the seventh through 12th grades in fall 1999.

The commission meets on the first Monday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Beverly Tucker, 868-1234, answers questions.

The deadline to apply is June 1 at 5 p.m. Applications are available at City Hall, 13777 Fruitvale Ave., during regular business hours.

Also, the city is looking to fill four vacancies on the Planning Commission, when members' terms expire April 30.

Applicants must attend a regular commission meeting between now and March 24, and will be interviewed by the City Council on April 7.

The application deadline is March 19 at 5 p.m. Any resident of Saratoga over 18 can apply.

    Call 868-1269.
