    Obituary

    Joseph Stollery

Former Saratoga resident Joseph Gordon "Stub" Stollery died Feb. 14 in Grass Valley, where he had been residing. He was 84.

Born Aug. 6, 1914, in San Mateo, Stollery graduated from San Mateo High School in 1932 and married Dorothy Roberta Crane in 1935. The couple had recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

Stollery had a long career in journalism and public relations. His first writing job was for the San Mateo Times; later he worked as a sports and news reporter with the San Francisco Call Bulletin, San Jose Mercury Herald and San Francisco Examiner. During World War II, he went to work for Henry J. Kaiser at his Permanente Plant. Stollery moved to the company's Oakland headquarters at war's end and, among other duties, was active in developing the Kaiser Health Plan. He retired as Kaiser's corporate director of public relations and advertising in 1955.

The Stollery family then moved to a summer home on Via Regina Way in Saratoga. Stollery was instrumental in the incorporation of Saratoga as a city, serving as chairman of the Saratoga Citizens Committee. After moving outside the proposed incorporation boundaries in order to expand the Saratoga Springs Resort, which he and his wife had founded, he resigned from the committee. Stollery was also a charter member of the Saratoga Rotary Club and was a director of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce.

In 1960, Stollery and his wife moved to the Sierra foothills and started a printing, office supply and arts and crafts business in Tahoe City. They later founded the Tahoe City World, now called Tahoe World. After selling that newspaper in 1970, Stollery continued writing his column, called "Sierra Sue," until 1981.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Stollery of Grass Valley; sons Rodger Stollery of Salem, Ore. and Gary Stollery of Grass Valley; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother Arnold Stollery of Sacramento; and many nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley, 95945.
