Falcons split a pair of tennis decisions It's the same old story
By Dick Sparrer
Every spring it seems like the same story in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League--Monta Vista is the favorite to win the boys tennis championship.
It's the same story this spring. And, unfortunately, for the Saratoga boys, they had to open the league season against the Matadors.
The Falcons dropped a 7-0 decision to the Mats in the De Anza Division opener last week. But things weren't all bad for the Falcons--they came back two days later with an exciting 4-3 win over Homestead.
Freshman Ashvin Soin nailed a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles, and senior Jason Hou won a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) thriller at No. 3 to lead Saratoga to the win over the Mustangs.
Senior Scott Swanberg teamed with soph Justin Sung for a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, and sophomores Andy Tzou and Kenneth Rhow won by default at No. 3 doubles to help clinch the victory for Saratoga.
The Falcons, 1-1 in the young league season, are 3-2 for the year. They opened the year with a 5-2 win over Del Mar, lost 4-3 to Bellarmine and beat Aragon 4-3 in the first week of the campaign.
Soin and sophomore Alexander Sevastopoulos were singles winners against the Dons, and the doubles teams of James Chao-Amit Modi, Hou-Mark Hsu and Tzou-Rhow were also winners.
Senior standout Brian Doore won at No. 1 singles, and Soin won at No. 2, but the Falcons dropped a tight decision to the Bells. Tzou and Rhow teamed for a win at No. 3 doubles.
Soin was the one singles winner, but Saratoga swept in doubles play against Aragon. The teams of Chao-Modi, Swanberg-Sung and Tzou-Rhow were winners against the Dons.
Doore, Swanberg, Modi and Chao are top varsity returners for the Falcons this spring, and head coach Dave Schirtzinger ranks Soin, Rhow and Tzou as top newcomers.
The coach figures his Falcons for a top three finish in the division this spring after Saratoga tied for second in the league last year.
Vigil 4-over
The Saratoga golf team opened the season with a 204-225 win over Westmont.
Senior Jacob Vigil fired a 4-over par 38 to lead the Falcons to victory at the Saratoga Country Club. Daniel Ruby shot a 40 for Saratoga, and Nicholas Lin, Brian Mann and Robert Pfeifer each finished at 42.
Freshman Conner McDonald led the Warriors with a solid 39, and senior Mike Vivona shot a 41. Chris Carveiro finished at 45, Phil Miyano shot 48, and Steve Dimon ended up with a 52.
Swimmers split
The Saratoga swimming teams split against Los Altos. The girls cruised to a 109-67 win over the Eagles, but the boys lost 113-62.
Joanna Ilnicka, Cecelia Dotzler and Jennifer Cheung were each double winners for the Falcons against the Eagles.
Ilnicka breezed to firsts in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:10.81 and the 100 backstroke in 1:08.75; Dotzler took the 200 individual medley in 2:20.0 and the 500 free in 5:36.15; and Cheung won the 50 free in 26.94 and the 100 free in 58.3.
Sophomore Sarah Oberhauser joined the others in the winner's circle with a first in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.3.
Volleyball win
The Saratoga boys volleyball team knocked off Fremont 15-13, 7-15, 10-15, 15-0, 15-12 in the first match of the year in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
