Red Cross offers pet first-aid class

The Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has organized Pet First Aid for Cats and Dogs, a course designed to help pet owners keep pets safe and to act with confidence during medical emergencies, until they can reach a veterinarian.

Among the subjects are how to check a pet's pulse, give chest compressions, use pressure to control bleeding, immobilize broken bones, perform the Heimlich maneuver and recognize poisonings. Although pets are not brought to the class, participants will practice on life-size animal mannequins. Registration begins now for classes in April, May and June. Cost is $30 and includes a pet first aid book. Call 577-2178 for more information.

    Waterfall hiker shares journeys

As part of its monthly community special events, REI Saratoga hosts Ann Marie Brown on March 23 at 7 p.m. for a presentation on some of the best waterfalls in the state and the hikes that lead to them.

Author of the guidebook California Waterfalls, Brown will share slides and information on her favorite waterfall hikes in the Bay Area and beyond. Last year alone she hiked more than 570 miles, all on California trails. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. The event is free.

Foothill Club hosts lecture on earth awareness

For the fifth installment of its 1998-99 Public Lecture Series, the Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes Karen Harwell on March 23 at 10 a.m. for a slide presentation titled "Our Unfolding Story, from Stardust to Us." Harwell believes that in order for human culture to move into a future that will be mutually enhancing for humans as well as all life on Earth, we must first come to an awareness of where we are, where we came from, what we are doing and where we are going.

With this understanding, she says, comes an existence in harmony with the universe and the natural earth systems that sustain all life.

The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, 20399 Park Place. A donation of $6 is appreciated. For more information, call 867-2361 or 354-2527.
