Mariucci to throw out Saratoga LL first pitch

By Dick Sparrer

It's a slow time of the year for Steve Mariucci. But the San Francisco 49ers coach will get a little busy this Saturday morning.

He won't be walking the sidelines barking out singles to quarterback Steve Young or linebacker Ken Norton, but rather he'll be walking out in the middle of the infield to help the Saratoga Little League "kickoff" its 1998 season.

Mariucci will be the featured guest during Saratoga's opening ceremonies March 14, 8:30-9:15 a.m., when he's scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch to get the season off and running.

The 49er coach will toss that pitch in the general direction of the first triplets to ever play in the Saratoga Little League. Five-year-olds Jaqueline, Anthony and Veronica Lewis will team up to serve as catchers for Mariucci. The triplets will play for the Marlins, a t-ball team managed by their mother, Michele.

Rachel Udall, a student at St. Andrews School, will sing the National Anthem during Saturday's ceremonies that will get the 1998 season under way.

"Last year was the most successful season we've ever had," said league president Susie Dymoke, and Saratoga is already off to a strong start this season with 475 children signed up to play baseball this spring.

Saratoga teams will play two-inning exhibition games as part of opening day events this weekend. Other activities include photographs and a hit-a-thon that serves as the league's major fundraiser for the year.
