Riley named Coast Conference MVP

Jane Riley was named the most valuable player of the Coast Conference's North Division, and the De Anza women's basketball star certainly played like it in the first two rounds of the Northern California playoffs.

Riley (Westmont) poured in 19 points to lead the Dons to a 62-46 win over American River, and she came back with 13 points in a 76-48 win over Fresno City College. The two wins helped the Lady Dons improve to 30-6 for the year.

Shana Buchanan tossed in 12 points, and Jaymie Woodard added 11 in the win over American River. Jenny Miller (Prospect) chipped in with eight.

Woodard was the scoring leader in the win over Fresno with 17 points.

Riley was named the conference mvp after leading De Anza to the division championship. Miller and Woodard were also picked to the all-conference squad.

Reeves leads Vikings

Scott Reeves poured in 23 points to lead the West Valley Community College men's basketball team to a 94-70 win over Columbia in the first round of the Northern California community college basketball playoffs.

Reeves had a three-pointer among his five field goals, and he buried 12 of 13 free throws to lead all West Valley scorers.

Toby Vares and Taplar Mvogo supported with 13 points apiece, and Robert Taylor added 12. James Holmes joined the four in double digits with 10 points, Darrell Teat had eight, and Derek Mickle and Keith Lakstigala added six each.

West Valley improved to 23-8 for the year with the win.

Heinrich falls 1-0

A heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Tyronne Glover of El Camino kept Westmont wrestling star Tim Heinrich from placing at the state wrestling championships last weekend in Stockton.

Glover went on to place seventh at 152 pounds, but Heinrich did not place.

Still, it was quite a senior season for the Warrior star. He placed second in the Central Coast Section championships, and he achieved the goal of earning a state berth.
