New Editor: Dick Sparrer
Sports editor Dick Sparrer now 'Saratoga News' editor
Dick Sparrer, longtime sports editor of the Saratoga News, has been named editor of the paper.
Sparrer comes to the Saratoga News from the Contra Costa Times, where he was managing editor of that publication's 10 community newspapers, which are distributed weekly.
Dale Bryant, executive editor of Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, which publishes the Saratoga News, announced the appointment of Sparrer to the editor position.
"I've worked with Dick for nine years in his capacity as sports editor, so I couldn't be more pleased that he has accepted the editor's job," Bryant said. "He is passionate about community journalism, and he knows the West Valley well. Dick grew up in Los Gatos and attended schools there beginning with kindergarten."
Sparrer graduated in 1967 from Los Gatos High School, where he played sports and worked on the school paper. He also worked on the Norseman as a student at West Valley College.
Sparrer landed his first newspaper job at the Milpitas Post in 1971. Later, he became the sports editor for the Suburban Newspaper group.
He worked his way up to the managing editor position with the Contra Costa paper, first as editor of the Concord Transcript.
Sparrer's wife, Randee, is a teacher, as is his older son, Mike. His other son, Kevin, is a student at West Valley College. Sparrer resides with his family in San Jose.
