Comer project moves forward
Santa Clara Valley Water District Director Greg Zlotnick said last week that he would urge the district to go ahead with a full exploration of a $1.4 million project to remove the debris basin on Calabazas Creek near Comer Drive.
The debris basin was installed by the water district in 1973 to prevent heavy sediment from local quarries from washing down into the Calabazas watershed, filling up the streambed, and causing flooding.
The quarries have since closed down, and the district has begun taking measures across the county to restore streams to a more natural state.
Residents directly downstream of the basin wall expressed concern March 6 that their streamfront property might erode if the wall were removed. City council members wondered about new erosion, but also favored a restoration of the creek.
New rules set for commissions
The city council has overhauled rules governing its advisory commissions.
Commissioners can still only serve two consecutive four-year terms, as has been policy. But now they can be re-appointed to a commission after they've been termed out, following a one-year hiatus from a specific commission.
The city is also limiting individual membership to one city commission. That does not exclude a commissioner from serving on non-commission boards or committees, such as a bond oversight committee.
The city council will be able to remove commissioners who have missed three consecutive meetings.
Council member John Mehaffey suggested March 6 that the city stagger appointments to commission so they don't turn over a large number of seats in any one year, as the planning commission did last April.
