WVC's Salter wins state community college award
By Rebecca Ray
Chancellor Linda Salter of the West Valley-Mission Community College District has reason to celebrate. The Association for California Community Colleges (ACCCA) named her as a recipient of its annual Harry Buttimer Distinguished Administrator Award.
The association grants the Buttimer Award, its highest honor, to community college leaders each year for integrity, compassion, leadership and contributions to their profession, college and community. Dr. William Fedderson, president of Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, was also named a winner of the award.
"This was one of the real high points for me in my whole career," Salter said. Although she has won awards from community and business associations, "[The Buttimer Award] is the one that really touches my heart," she said, because it came from people who have worked with her for decades.
District Vice Chancellor Steven Kinsella, West Valley College President Marchelle Fox and Mission College President Christopher O'Hearn nominated Salter, while Robert Owens, president of the district board of trustees, Congressman Mike Honda, three California state senators and assemblywomen Elaine Alquist and Rebecca Cohn wrote letters of recommendation.
Salter accepted the award on Feb. 21 at an ACCCA conference in Los Angeles.
Owens says he is impressed with the way Salter, who has been chancellor for three years, has developed the district's management team. The team's excellence reflects on both her choice of employees and their willingness to work with her, Owens says.
Fox says that Salter is organized and fun to work with and is presiding over the district at a time of unprecedented growth.
In addition to encouraging the district to form more partnerships, Salter has served as a mentor in the ACCCA mentorship program. She is also frequently asked to participate in the Asilomar Women's Leadership Seminar, a statewide leadership conference.
Salter became chancellor of the West Valley-Mission Community College District after serving as president of Skyline College in San Bruno for 13 years.
