Saratoga shines in the pages of 'Sunset Magazine'

    By Mary Ann Cook

SAVORY SARATOGA: An article in the March issue of Sunset Magazine features Saratoga. Titled "Savoring Saratoga," the spread concentrates on one winery, two gardens--Hakone and Montalvo--and about a half-dozen restaurants that run the gamut from deli to French.

Two photos accompany the piece, extolling the village delights: one shows Hakone's garden and the other catches diners at La Mere Michelle. The diners pictured, incidentally, are Los Gatos Assistant Planner Steve Lynch and his wife, Grace. It was a special occasion: her birthday.

Savannah-Chanelle Vineyards on Congress Springs Road was pointed out for a pre-dining wine tasting. And five restaurants were cited--Rose International Market and Deli, The Basin, Big Basin Bistro, La Fondue and Viaggio.

ROOF SITTER: We're told there were flagpole sitters in the '20s, but we had never heard of a roof sitter until this week. Not only a roof sitter, but a principal roof sitter. That would be Nancy Atkinson, principal of Rolling Hills Middle School. She promised to spend the day on the roof.

The promise was contingent on the school reaching its goal of $6,000 at a benefit walkathon for juvenile diabetes research. Well, the school not only reached but surpassed its goal, raising $11,000 from the efforts of 700 students walking around the track for two hours.

So, a few weeks later, up on the rooftop went the game Atkinson. She was equipped with an umbrella, a laptop and a walkie-talkie. An extension ladder was used for her rooftop ascent, then taken away so students wouldn't be tempted to join her.

She was, however, serenaded by the band, with a stirring rendition of the song that contains the words "up on the housetop..." A decided plus to the successful execution of the challenge: unlike its namesake hills, the school roof is flat.

The benefit was inspired by former student Taylor Graves, who has Type 1 diabetes and who organized other fundraisers, and by the fact that Rolling Hills has a higher proportion of diabetic students than the law of averages warrants.

Statistically one in 1,000 have the disease; but at Rolling Hills there are five or six amongst a student population of 1,015, according to Colleen Wright, school secretary. Carmon Allen, the school's athletic director, organized the fundraiser.

Though Rolling Hills is in Los Gatos, it is part of the Campbell School District and draws students from Saratoga, Los Gatos, Campbell and San Jose.

BALLET FUNDRAISERS: Phyllis Romaine of Los Gatos is one of the quartet of women who will stage the gala fundraiser for Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley on April 6 in the Levey Center at Santa Clara University. Romaine is in charge of the live auction and is a ballet board member.

Kathy Tuttle of Los Gatos designed all the printed material, signage and stationery, and Linda Covell heads the Hospitality Committee. Board members from Saratoga are Zoe Alameda, Lewis Franklin, Joan Hackworth, Robert Lanz, Marie Low and Charmaine Warmenhoven.

Among other board members are Linda Sarles, Robert Wallace, Anita Del Grande and Gale England of Los Gatos and Mary Allan of Monte Sereno.

CASINO ROYALE: The fundraiser for the new Performing Arts and Lecture Center at Saratoga High was deemed a rousing success, having raised $50,000 for the project. Some 250 folks attended and the setting was awash in celebrities. Celebs acted as auctioneers, autographed photos and schmoozed.

Celebrity guests included actors Don Murray, Kevin Dobson and Frank Bonner, and athletes included Olympic diver Sammy Lee, former New York Yankee Andy Carey and Rudy Ruettiger, the Notre Dame football player whose life was depicted in the movie Rudy. The event was held at the home of Ted and Dana Schroeder.

FASHION SHOW: Soroptimists will hold their annual fashion show luncheon March 14 at La Rinconada Country Club in Los Gatos. Dennis White at the piano will supply the entertainment; fashions will be from Studio 67 and Patrick James, both of Saratoga. Tickets, $45, will benefit House on the Hill, a recovery center for women.

House on the Hill is unique in recovery houses in that children are allowed to live there too. The coordinator of the event is Marilyn White at 408.867.9417 or Sue LaForge, 408.280.7739.

Club members each adopted an individual from House on the Hill at Christmastime as gift-giving recipients. Gifts were chosen from each resident's wish list.

ANTIQUE SHOW & TELL: Assistance League's second annual Antique Show and Tell luncheon will be held March 27 at Nordahl Hall in Los Gatos. Tickets are $25 and include a box lunch and one informal antique appraisal. Additional appraisals can be purchased for $5 at the door.

The ticket chairperson is Becky McEntee, 408.354.4051. The club welcomes new members: the membership chairperson is Jan Ehrhardt, 408.356.4274.
