Richard D. Davis

Richard D. Davis, 65, died Feb. 28 after a brief illness. A native of San Francisco, he was a resident of Saratoga and Los Gatos for the past 30 years. He was an instructor in the English department at San Jose City College, where he taught English as a Second Language for 30 years.

As an active environmentalist, he helped establish the campus Green Team, an environmental action group, and also taught environmental ethics at San Jose State University. In addition, he belonged to 30 different environmental clubs, including the Save the Redwoods League.

He received his bachelor's degree from Principia College in Illinois, and earned a master's degree in applied linguistics from San Francisco State and a second master's degree in environmental studies from San Jose State. He and his wife, Starr Brandt, co-authored Tongues and Totems: Comparative Arts of the Pacific Basin with special emphasis on Northwest Coast Indian Art.

He was also an active member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Los Gatos, where he served as a reader for three years and played the piano for the Sunday school for 10 years. He also played the piano as part of an ensemble program at SJCC.

His hobbies included hiking, biking, birding, philology, photography and the weather, his wife said.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Rachelle Davis, a student at Saratoga High School, and Jeff Davis, a student at Cuesta Junior College in San Luis Obispo.

Kuros Tabari

Saratoga resident Kuros Tabari, a Los Gatos plastic surgeon, died of respiratory failure March 4. He was 65.

Born June 24, 1930 in Sari, Mazandaran, Iran, Tabari came to the United States in the 1940s and became a citizen in the early 1960s. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Tabari earned his medical degree in 1956 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He received specialty training from 1957 to 1959 at the Owens Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Louisiana.

A certified member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Tabari performed numerous surgeries over his 25 years of private practice in Los Gatos. He was affiliated with the Community Hospital of Los Gatos, where he served as Chief of Staff in 1985. Tabari was a past president of Flying Physicians, an aviators' group. He was also active in the Flying Doctors, a humanitarian organization that periodically flies doctors to Mexico and other Latin American countries to provide free medical care to poor families.

Last April, Tabari completed the last of three reconstructive surgeries on a 9-year-old Mexican girl disfigured by a large tumor on her upper lip; the Community Hospital and its personnel absorbed the cost to have her transported to Los Gatos.

Tabari was affiliated with many professional, educational and community organizations. When he had time, he enjoyed aviation, tennis, skiing, travel and music.

Survivors include wife Leela of Saratoga; sons Cyrus Tabari of Los Gatos and Zane Tabari of Aptos; daughters Melissa Tabari of San Jose and Cynthia Moehring of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Carleen and Patrick Tabari of Los Gatos and Charles Moehring of Las Vegas; parents Zeinol and Nayereh Tabari of San Jose; brothers Kam Tabari of Monte Sereno and Keyvan Tabari of San Francisco; and sisters Kita Shahab of Woodland Hills and Kija Mizany of San Rafael.

Memorial services were held at Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills, Los Gatos. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Santa Clara County Unit, 1715 S. Bascom Ave., Suite 100, Campbell, 95008.

Russell L. Hulme

Russell L. Hulme, 69, died Feb. 20 in a skiing accident in Salt Lake City.

A native of Utah, he was a Saratoga resident for 37 years. He delivered the first baby born at Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and of the American College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association and the Santa Clara County Medical Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Hulme of Saratoga; his siblings, Harold Hulme, M.D., of Idaho, David Hulme of Arizona, Jean Smith of Utah, and John and Paul Hulme of Saratoga; his children, Diana Peterson of Utah, Jonathan Hulme, M.D., of Texas, Richard Hulme of Santa Barbara, Kristine Grimaud of San Jose, Mary Lynne McLaughlin of Saratoga, Teresa Whitaker of Los Angeles, Carma Glausi of Oregon, and Jennifer Kearon of England; and 32 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Feb. 26 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Saratoga Stake Center, Saratoga. Contributions can be made to the Russell L. Hulme, M.D., Medical Education Fund, c/o Saratoga National Bank, 12000 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, Saratoga, 95070.
