Sacred Heart scores win in math contest

Sacred Heart School in Saratoga achieved the highest score for a small school at the county level in Mathcounts, the annual junior-high math competition, held at San Jose State University on Feb. 24.

Sacred Heart seventh-grader Bobby Conrado, competing mostly against eighth-graders, reached the finals of the sprint round competition. This single-elimination, 28-student tournament pitted students against each other in a Jeopardy!-style competition. Conrado made it through four rounds before losing in the finals.

"I was nervous," said Conrado of his experiences in the competition. "I had to answer really fast. A lot of kids there were really smart."

Conrado added that he hopes to win next year's competition.

Also competing for Sacred Heart were Danny DaSilva, Charlene Killebrew, Michael Gilbert, Joe Jamello, Scott Almassy, Lynzy Caton, and Ana Vatavuk.
