Batter Up!

Opening day is a lucky day on the diamond in Saratoga. "Never in the history of Saratoga Little League has opening day been rained out," League President Keith Simon proudly told parents and players at the March 3 opening ceremonies for this year's season. Just about every one of the 469 players in the League showed up for the opening ceremonies, donning perfectly clean uniforms and accompanied by camera-toting parents.

The morning was cold and overcast, but the weather at Congress Springs Park stayed dry all day, despite forecasts to the contrary. It gave each of the 39 teams in five Leagues a chance to play at least one two-inning exhibition game, and take a crack at winning the slug fest--a hitting contest where players hit a ball off the tee for a chance to win prizes for the biggest wallops. This year's season ends June 1, just a little bit earlier than usual, Simon said, because of planned upgrades at the park.
