Prospect's Nick Vidal, taking a cut in Tuesday's rainy conditions, doubled in his club's 5-4 league win over Pioneer last week.

    Prospect battles conditions, Pioneer

The Prospect baseball team had more to worry about than Pioneer last week... the Panthers were battling Mother Nature, too.

The rain was pouring when the Prospect and Pioneer baseball teams took the field for their Tuesday game at the Prospect Avenue school.

And when the showers finally halted play midway through the fourth inning, the Panthers went home wet--and trailing the Mustangs 3-1.

The club returned to the field to complete the game under sunny skies on Friday, though, and things turned very bright for the Panthers.

They rallied back from the 3-1 deficit to pull out a 5-4 win over Pioneer in first game of the year in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Panthers were trailing the Mustangs 3-1 when rain halted play in the fourth inning on Tuesday. But when the clubs returned to the diamond on Friday to complete the game, the Panthers unloaded for four runs in the fifth to break the game open.

Chris Bonvechio had blasted a long solo homer to right field in the first inning, but that was the only run Prospect would get starting pitcher Derrick Yamada until rains stopped play on Tuesday.

Yamada returned to the hill on Friday and held on for the win as his teammates got him the lead in the fifth.

Nick Vidal belted a double for the Panthers.

Sean Sarsfield had three hits for the Mustangs and Sean Hallihan doubled. Brian Gilbert and Samir Ghia each knocked in two runs.

Westmont, meanwhile, split a pair of games in the Mt. Hamilton Jamboree. The Warriors topped Leland 6-4, but lost 10-2 to Santa Teresa.

Blake Barr doubled twice and singled twice to lead an 11-hit attack and was also the winning pitcher for the Warriors against the Chargers. Tony LaVista, who came on to get the save, added two hits.

Cris Snyder doubled and singled twice to knock in two runs for Westmont in the win.

Colin McAvoy had three hits and Tony Perez doubled, but the Warriors lost 10-2 to Santa Teresa.

In other action in the jamboree, Del Mar lost 11-1 to Leigh. Greg Leon had two hits for the Dons and Scott Martin doubled.

The Dons had lost 11-2 to Bellarmine in a nonleague game earlier in the week.
