Original story and musical program comes to Montalvo

Former Villa Montalvo artist resident Brenda Wong Aoki begins the national tour of Uncle Gunjiro's Girlfriend, her verbal and musical tale of forbidden love, on March 17 at 8 p.m. in Montalvo's Carriage House Theatre, 15400 Montalvo Road.

A true story based on the lives of her great-uncle and aunt, Uncle Gunjiro's Girlfriend offers a look at early 20th century views on Japanese/Caucasian marriage in California and follows the lives of the lovers and their descendants for three generations. Composer and musician Mark Izu, who is also a forerunner in the new genre of Asian-American jazz, accompanies Aoki with a haunting score. Aoki first developed the idea for her story while in residence at Montalvo in 1997.

Admission is $20 per person. For tickets, call 408.961.5858.

Chamber Singers offer a free show

The Saratoga High School Chamber Singers, under the direction of Jenny Guemmer, present a varied program on March 18 at 8 p.m. at Westhope Presbyterian Church, 12850 Saratoga Ave. Among the numbers are Irish Blessing, arranged by Paul Page; An Eriskay Love Lilt, a traditional Scottish tune; Four Folk Songs by Brahms and Ave Verum Corpus by Poulenc. Kathy Saye is the accompanist. Later this year, the SHS Chamber Singers will perform at the Heritage Festival in Anaheim. The program is free. Call 408.255.0955.

Cantor of local congregation to sing in concert

Hazzan Melanie Fine, the cantor at Congregation Beth David in Saratoga, performs in a concert titled From the Bimah to Broadway on March 26 at 7 p.m. at Le Petit Trianon, 72 N. 5th St. in downtown San Jose. Part One of her program, "Celebrating Beth David's Year of the Torah," includes liturgical Torah texts sung to scores by composers such as Handel, Gershwin and Kurt Weill. Part Two, "Life is a Cabaret," features popular show tunes sung in a cabaret style.

Admission, which is $25 for adults and $15 for students and seniors, includes a dessert reception. For tickets or more information, call Brenda Daulton at 408.257.3333.
