Saratoga Community Band will play March 22 at WVC
The Saratoga Community Band performs an eclectic concert March 22 at 8 p.m. at the West Valley College Theater, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. There is no charge, although voluntary donations will be accepted during intermission.
The program features cornet soloist James Howesman playing Variations on the Carnival of Venice, and soprano Susan Parks--who for eight years performed with Beach Blanket Babylon--singing selections from the Broadway musical Carousel. The concert also includes lively overtures and marches and jazz and popular music tunes. The band's December concert played to a standing-room only crowd, so early arrival is recommended for best seating.
Under the direction of former Saratoga High School band director Craig Northrup, the Saratoga Community Band began in 1990 with 35 members. It now boasts 100 members of all ages and walks of life. The band is sponsored by the West Valley College Music Department and the Department of Community Education. The band rehearses every Monday night and is open to all interested musicians in the area.
