News Briefs County approves money for roads
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a measure March 9 that will give $26 million in pavement repair funds to area cities and the county Roads Department.
The money, which comes from 1996's Measure B, was supposed to be doled out over nine years. Instead, it will now be given in just four years.
This is part of the lump payment that was worrying Saratoga City Manager Larry Perlin.
Smaller cities like Saratoga, he said, would be able to do more with the money if it was dispensed over a longer span of time. Also, Perlin was worried that the rush to spend will drive up work costs
Saratoga stands to get $628,000 in 1999 and then again next year. This comes on top of additional federal money expected later this year.
Mediator to lead playfields meetings
In a March 9 joint meeting between the city's Parks and Recreation Commission and the City Council, parks commissioners said they will hire a mediator to lead small, neighborhood meetings to make agreements on how playfield renovations can still take place.
In the meetings, set to begin next month, parks commissioners and representatives from the user groups--Quito Little League and AYSO soccer--will meet with as many as four neighborhood representatives, which, commissioners hope will span the vast array of opinions held on the subject.
The plan is to build and/or renovate sports playing fields on four sites throughout the city at Marshall Lane Elementary School, Blue Hills/Azule Park, Foothill Elementary School and Congress Springs Park.
While the Congress Springs and Foothill neighborhoods have been relatively silent in the debate, Marshall Lane and Blue Hills neighbors have been very outspoken. They're mostly upset at the potential of increased traffic, parking and noise hassles.
Firehouse site of next GGG meeting
The Good Government Group of Saratoga will hold its next meeting at the Saratoga Fire Station on March 23 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.
The GGG is hoping to help the Saratoga Fire District inform the public of the fire station's present condition.
