Zara and Albert van Wichen
AnniversaryVan Wichens mark 50 years Albert and Zara van Wichen, Saratoga residents for the past three decades, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary March 20 at La Hacienda Inn in Los Gatos. They met shortly after World War II in England--Zara's birthplace--through a British walking club. They were married March 24, 1948, and moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to the van Wichen family home. Three years later they had twins, Marilyn and Martin. In 1959, the family moved to the United States through a California sponsor while participating in the Fulbright foreign-exchange teaching program. Albert was a primary and secondary schoolteacher until his 1969 retirement. Zara ran the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce for a time and also belonged to a local branch of the Welcome Wagon organization. In addition to their two children, the couple also has two grandsons, Peter and Jared van Wichen.
