Saratoga NewsNews BriefsStreet Dance date is set Plans for the Celebrate Saratoga! Street Dance are already under way, and local businesses are being told to get ready. The dance this year is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26. Big Basin Way will be closed to through traffic that day from 4 p.m. to midnight, and traffic will be detoured to Oak Street. The Celebrate Saratoga! Street Dance attracts about 25,000 people annually and features booths selling food from local restaurants, a variety of music stages and dance areas, and wines from area wineries. Council proclaims day to write to great kids The Saratoga City Council voted March 4 to proclaim March 19 "Absolutely Incredible Kid Day." The event is sponsored by the national organization Camp Fire Boys and Girls, which encourages parents to write letters to children on March 19 commemorating the event and telling the kids how incredible they are. Camp Fire officials said it is their goal to make sure that every child in Santa Clara County receives a letter on that day. The Camp Fire Boys and Girls strives to teach children self-reliance, good citizenship and leadership through its programs. Interim finance director contract gets approval The council approved an agreement March 4 to hire an interim finance director until the city can find a permanent one. Oliver Wright, a certified public accountant, began working immediately after his contract was approved and will receive $65 an hour for his services--with a fee that is not expected to exceed $35,000 for the total amount of time he works for the city. The need for to fill the position arose as part of the city's reorganization process, the second in a year. Wright is contracted to work through June, three to four days a week, and is currently employed with the West Valley Sanitation District on a part-time basis. Wright will be responsible for assisting in the posting of city accounting records and financial reports, preparation for the annual audit by independent accountants and preparation of the city's annual report to the state, among other things. Women's groups to host meeting on legal issues San Jose's treatment of Proposition 209 will be the subject of a luncheon hosted by the West Valley Republican Women, Federated on March 19 at the Saratoga Country Club, located at 21990 Prospect Road in Saratoga. Deborah LaFetra, a senior attorney from the Pacific Legal Foundation, is expected to discuss PLF's enforcing actions in response to what it calls San Jose's violations of Prop. 209 and the first major case applying to Prop. 209, and will provide information about three initiatives voters can expect on the ballot this year. The event will begin with a social hour at 11:30 a.m.; lunch will be at noon and costs $11. For more information, call Kay Eshleman at 354-3373.
