Teerlink stars, but Falcons fall

Coleman romps to a pair of wins for Saratoga boys

By Dick Sparrer

Taylor Teerlink did everything she could do.

The sophomore speedster raced to a couple of wins in the hurdles, and she helped the Saratoga girls' 1,600-meter relay to an easy victory.

But as much as she did, Teerlink couldn't lead the Saratoga girls' team to a win when the Falcons went up against Los Altos in the season opener in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Saratoga dropped a 65-60 heartbreaker to the Eagles, despite a sweep in the 100-meter hurdles and one-two finishes in the 300 hurdles and 800-meter run.

"It was a tough loss," admitted Saratoga coach Marshall Clark after the Falcons dropped the league decision to the Eagles.

Saratoga lost 86.5-40.5 to boys' varsity competition the same day.

The Falcons will be back in action this week when they host Gunn in a league meet on March 19, 3:15 p.m.

Teerlink starred for the Saratoga girls against Los Altos. The soph was first in the 100 hurdles in 16.97, with Laura Birenbaum second in 17.50 and Laura Prolo third in 18.07. Teerlink came back with a first in the 300 hurdles in 51.3, with Prolo second in 51.5.

Teerlink and Prolo later joined forces with Ashley Ferriera and Jenny Szeto to take the 1,600 relay in 4:30.2.

Ferriera led a one-two finish in the 800. The sophomore was first in 2:34.6, with teammate Carli Graziosi second in 2:35.2.

Junior Anne Ricketts was tops in the 1,600 meters in 5:40, and sophomore Jody Kellogg was a winner in the 3,200 meters in 13:07.4, with Whitney Dotzler third in 14:04.8. Kellogg was also third in the 1,600 in 6:10.

Seconds went to Szeto (400 in 68.33), Brie Wilson (100 in 13.22), Birenbaum (long jump at 14-8), Karen Bencala (shot put at 29-9) and

D. Joplin (200 in 29.4). Wilson was also third in the long jump at 14-6.

Brent Coleman, like Teerlink, was a double winner for Saratoga, but the boys, like the girls, lost to the Eagles.

Coleman sprinted to a win in the 100 meters in 11.2, and he was a winner in the 200 meters in 23.5.

Alex Daniels supported with a first in the 800 in 2:02.2, and Drew Copeland was tops in the 3,200 meters in 10:57.3.

Brett Pahler was second in the 1,600 in 4:53, and Ori Benhanou was second in the 3,200 in 11:27.4. Sophomore Todd Anderson added a second in the high jump at 5-8 3/4, and John Glasser was second in the 200 in 23.8.

Glasser added a third in the 100 in 11.9. Tristan Hoare was third in the 400 in 55.59, and Jeff Verson and Ian Jang contributed two thirds apiece--Verson in the 110 high hurdles in 18.44 and 300 intermediate hurdles in 45.8, and Jang in the long jump at 18-6 and triple jump at 38-7.

The only team win for the Falcons came in the boys' frosh-soph division.

Steve Chuang won three events to lead Saratoga to a 90-36 win over the Eagles. Chuang was first in the 65-meter high hurdles in 10.43, first in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 47.6 and first in the long jump at 17-11.

Rich Lee breezed to a win in the 100 in 12.28, and Justin Quon took the 200 in 25.6. The two also teamed with Jonathan Shih and Dennis Chang to win the 400 relay in 48.17.

Todd Duncan topped the high-jump bar in 5-2 for a win, and Robert Kim took the 400 meters in 60.0. Kim, Lee, Chang and David Yin combined for a first in the 1600 relay in 3:57.6.

Saratoga lost 66-39 to Los Altos in the girls' junior varsity division despite the efforts of Laura Lin, Danielle Foust, Joan Cheng and Angela Chua.

Lin raced to a victory in the 1,600 meters in 6:19, and Foust was first in the 800 in 2:50.9. Cheng won the 3,200 meters in 15:01.6 , and Chua tossed the discus 76-2 for a victory.
