Surrounded by Saratoga Little League players and coaches, Mayor Nick Streit (foreground) officially opens Congress Springs on the first day of youth baseball season, March 9. The finished park was the result of combined city funding and donations from baseball and soccer supporters, following a city appeal to citizens to help round out funding for the park. Most of the sports-specific equipment, from backstops to soccer goals, was donated by sports groups. Though sports leaders grappled with city officials after the city refused to waive use and maintenance fees at Congress Springs in exchange for more than $200,000 worth of donations, there's no dispute that young athletes now have a top-notch park. With professional-level turf and brand new equipment, "It's a beautiful facility," said Saratoga Little League President Keith Simon.
