Registration set to begin for 2002-03 school year

The Saratoga Union School District begins registration for the 2002-2003 school year April 1. Parents of new kindergarten through eighth grade students can pick up registration packets at the district office, 20460 Forrest Hills Drive, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The open enrollment policy allows residents to choose the K-5 school of their choice, if space is available. The K-5 schools are Argonaut, Foothill and Saratoga elementary schools. All sixth- through eighth-graders attend Redwood Middle School.

Argonaut will hold a visitation day on March 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. (parents should call for a reservation), a drop-in day on April 23 from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. (no appointment necessary), and an open house on May 16 at 7 p.m. Call the school at 408.867.4773 for more information.

Foothill will hold an open house on May 16 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Call the school at 408.867.4036 for more information.

Parents who are interested in enrolling their fifth-graders at Saratoga School may observe the school's fifth-grade program on April 17 at 8:45 a.m. The school will also hold an open house on April 25 at 7 p.m. Call the school at 408.867.3476 for more information.

If the requests for a certain grade level at a particular school exceed the space available, the district will hold a lottery the week of May 17. The district will notify students of school placement no later than the first week of July.

District officials say they will make every effort to keep families together. The district encourages parents with students already enrolled to register the students' siblings who are new students before May 15.

Redwood will hold an open house on April 3 at 7 p.m. and an orientation for incoming new parents on April 16 at 7 p.m. Call the school at 408.867.3042 for more information.

Parents of new K-8 students must provide up-to-date immunization records signed by a physician, as well as required residency documentation. Homeowners must provide a current property tax bill or grant deed, a PG&E bill and a piece of business mail. Renters must provide a lease, a copy of a canceled rent check, a PG&E or other utility bill and a piece of business mail. Parents whose children are living with relatives must provide a utility bill and piece of business mail for the relative, as well as two pieces of business mail for the parent. Parents must also provide a current property tax bill or grant deed for relatives who own homes and a lease and a copy of a canceled rent check for renting relatives. Both the relative and parent must sign an affidavit available at the district office.

In addition, parents of kindergartners and first-graders must provide their children's birth certificates. First-grade students' parents must also provide health examination forms.

Parents must turn in completed registration packets to the district office between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

For more information, call Loree Ferla at the district office at 408.867.3424, ext. 200.
