With scheduled performances including a Chinese snake dance, a dance from classical India and an Irish dance and skit, the 14th annual Argonaut Variety Show promises to be a multicultural celebration that displays a wide range of student talents.

The show will have an Egyptian theme, with a banner reading "Surf the Nile" and including a mock address for an Argonaut web site (http://www.Argonaut.com).

The event, which will have more than 50 acts, will feature piano pieces, solo songs, solo and group dances, and jokes. The opening act will have 41 kids singing the song "King Tut," with lyrics adapted to an Argonaut School theme. In addition, students will announce the show, operate the sound system, and work as the backstage and frontstage crew.

"The show is a learning experience, in that it provides a way for kids to explore how to work in teams," said Smeeta Gupta, one of the organizers for the PTA-sponsored event.

Many of the students in the show have developed their own performances. Said Argonaut School Principal Sue Brooks: "The kids get to show the variety of their talents. Participating in the show builds self-esteem while it gives students presence and confidence."

The Argonaut Variety Show will be held March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Argonaut School cafeteria. Admission is $1.
