Bamboo artist visits Hakone

Hafu Matsumoto, a traditional basketmaker and artist visiting from Japan, will demonstrate his art at Hakone Gardens on March 24 from 2 to 5 p.m. Matsumoto studied under master bamboo craftsman Shokansai Iizuka. His work has been widely exhibited in Japan and is presently on view at San Francisco's Gallery Japonesque. In his program at Hakone, he will show completed works, give a lecture and slide presentation, and create a woven art piece using bamboo from Hakone Gardens. The afternoon's activities will include a sake reception and traditional Japanese bamboo flute music by Gen Morita.
