RECORD NUMBERS POUNDED THE PAVEMENT IN GREAT RACE

There were 2,500 registered runners and walkers in the Great Race Feb. 26. More than 30 of them were pushing their offspring in baby buggies!

Several Saratogans won awards in their age categories, including Colleen Corcoran, Marie Hollenhorst, Lauren Sherburne, Maggie Ricketts, Woody Riley, Alicia and Debbie Follmar, Elaine Smith, Betty Bogart, and James Cochrane. Roger Adams, physical education coach at St. Andrews, ran with 20 of his students.

I saw Mayor Paul Jacobs and his wife, Renee, at the new Blue Rock Shoot cafe and bookstore opening. Proceeds went to the Saratoga Education Foundation. The Jacobs said they were pleased to support such a worthy cause.

The crab was delicious at the Chamber of Commerce's annual crab feed event March 2. Mervyn Salt mentioned there that he recently attended a landscape management clinic. Keynote speakers were Ben and Jerry (of Ben and Jerry ice cream fame). It takes a lot of energy to be creative, they said.

Mary Ellen McCammon, chairwoman of the annual Sacred Heart Festival of Tables and fashion show, and her hostesses know all about the energy it takes to be creative. Thirty tables were cleverly decorated with individual table themes, including everything from Mardi Gras Madness to Home Tweet Home with a display of bird houses.

Roseann Traina won the $1,000 grand prize, an eight-place table setting and catered dinner for eight from Talk of the Town Catering and Cafe.

Speaking of being creative, Mary Henderson reports the American Association of University Women is giving prizes for the most creative and prettiest hats worn at their Hats Off to You fundraiser scholarship luncheon March 28. Call 867-1928 for details.

April 20 marks the Silicon Valley Ball's 10th anniversary. Karen Krueger, co-chairwoman of the event committee, says comedian Jay Leno will be the star entertainer. The theme for the evening is "Silicon Valley Has Heart." Various works of art will be auctioned, including our own Judy Marshall's. Also being auctioned are doodles by famous stars and an exciting Olympic package. Call 946-7955 for information.
