Benjamin Strong
Benjamin Strong Jr., 71, died March 8 of a heart attack.
Born in New York City, he was a Saratoga resident for 30 years. An active member of his community, he was a founding member and current chairman of Saratoga's KSAR Channel 6 community-access television station.
After completing his time in the U.S. Navy in 1948, Strong joined IBM in 1952. Before retiring in 1984, he worked in sales, customer service and product development. His employment with IBM included work at the Los Gatos plant.
His community involvement included membership in the Commonwealth Club of California, the American Yacht Club, and the National Association of Watchmakers. He was also a ham radio operator and an avid photographer.
According to his son Ben, his work with KSAR was a passion. "He put his heart and soul into that organization," he said.
Bob Clancy, also a cofounder of KSAR, agreed that Strong was very supportive of the station. "He was extremely active in KSAR. He had a lot of good ideas, and he was a doer."
Tessa McGoldrick, access director for KSAR, said, "His dedication, energy and enthusiasm have been a tremendous asset to the growth of community access in Saratoga."
McGoldrick said Strong was an inspirational leader and a good friend. Clancy added, "He was well liked by everyone who worked with him."
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Strong of Saratoga; his daughter, Shirley Wes of Atherton; his two sons, Ben Strong of Stockton and David Strong of Los Altos; and, six grandchildren.
Memorial services were held March 14 at Saratoga Presbyterian Church.
