Westmont's Reed Dickert tossed a four-hit shutout in a 12-0 win over Santa Teresa.
Stouffer saves win for Westmont
Behnke tosses Falcons to win
By Dick Sparrer
Bill Stouffer came on in relief to pick up a save for the Westmont baseball team in last week's impressive 10-2 win over Oak Grove.
But Stouffer saved the game in more ways than one for the Warriors.
The 5-foot-10 senior came on in relief of starting pitcher Ben Peterson to pick up the save, but he also saved the Warriors with his bat--doubling and knocking in three runs in the game.
The victory helped even Westmont's record at 2-2 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Warriors are now 5-5 for the year.
Peterson started on the hill for the Warriors and picked up the win, but he gave way to Stouffer late in the game. It was in the late inning when Westmont turned a close game into a runaway.
The clubs each scored in the first and were locked in a 1-1 tie through three innings. Westmont scored two in the fourth, but Oak Grove answered right back with a run to make it 3-2.
The Warriors unloaded for three in the fifth, though, to take command, then scored a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh while the Eagles were held scoreless.
Mike Gorski and Jacob Goytia each doubled for Westmont, and Chris Snyder knocked in two runs.
Earlier in the week, Westmont had lost a 6-3 decision to Leigh. Stouffer had two hits in the game.
A week earlier, it was junior Reed Dickert in the spotlight.
Dickert opened the week by tossing a four-hit shutout in a 12-0 win over Santa Teresa. Dickert also doubled in the win.
Stouffer singled and doubled to drive in two runs and Snyder had two hits. Travis Cheney doubled in two runs and Peterson knocked in a pair.
Dickert drove in two runs a couple of days later, but the Warriors lost 8-3 to Valley Christian.
Panthers win
In Santa Teresa Division play last week, Prospect pulled out an 8-3 win over Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers improved to 1-2 in the division and to 2-5 overall with the win.
Curtis Wills tossed a four-hitter for the win, pushing his mound record to 2-1.
Scott McVay homered and doubled and Kevin McPeck singled and doubled to lead the eight-hit attack for the Panthers.
The clubs each scored two runs in the second, but the Cardinals broke the tie with a run in the third. Prospect rallied for three in the fourth to take the 5-3 lead, though, then scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to clinch the win.
A week earlier, the Panthers were blanked 1-0 by Piedmont Hills and 4-0 by Independence to open league play.
A week that started out with such promise ended on a dismal note for the Saratoga baseball team.
Falcons split
The Falcons opened the week with a 5-2 win over Monta Vista, but they lost 9-0 a couple of days later to Wilcox, the first-place club in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Brett Behnke went the distance to toss a four-hitter for the Falcons in the 5-2 win over the Matadors. He was touched for a couple of runs in the first, but blanked the Mats the rest of the way to claim the win, his third in as many decisions.
Scott Moran knocked in three runs for the Falcons in the win and Todd Ziegler and Justin Oliver ripped two hits apiece.
The Mats scored the two in the first to take the early lead, but the Falcons tied it with two in the bottom of the first. Saratoga then picked up single runs in the third, fifth and sixth to clinch the win.
Things didn't go as well against the unbeaten Chargers. Wilcox scored in each of the first four innings on the road to the victory.
Marc Muniz doubled for Saratoga's only hit of the game.
Saratoga slipped to 3-2 in the division and to 5-7 for the year with the loss.
Prior to beating Monta Vista, Behnke had flipped a one-hit shutout to lead the Falcons to a 1-0 league win over Milpitas. Oliver and Moran each doubled in the win for the Falcons.
The clubs were locked in a scoreless tie for five innings before the Falcons broke things up with the game's only run in the sixth.
Vikes top Paly
Lynbrook, meanwhile, lost 9-2 to first-place Fremont, but came back a day later to beat Palo Alto 6-5.
James White had a big day for the Vikings against Paly with three triples to drive in four runs in the 6-5 victory. He was also the winning pitcher for the Vikes.
Amir Tahsini singled and doubled in the Lynbrook win and Brodie Maag doubled.
A day earlier, though, the Vikings could manage just four hits in a 9-2 loss to Fremont. Tahsini doubled for the Vikes and Jeff Seip and Eric Barnes each tripled.
