Saratoga Foothill Club welcomes naturalist artist
The Saratoga Foothill Club has invited artist and author Mary Jo Koch to speak at the fifth program of its 2000-2001 Public Lecture Series on March 27 at 10 a.m. Koch, whose program is titled Nature Through the Eyes of an Author/Artist, has exhibited with the Audubon Society at the California Academy of Science in San Francisco. She also conducts nature painting workshops. After her Foothill Club presentation, she will sign books as well.
The program takes place at the Saratoga Foothill Club clubhouse, at 20399 Park Place. Admission is a $6 donation. Call 408.354.2527 or 408.867.2361
Community band is gearing up for its spring concert
The Saratoga Community Band invites the community to attend its annual free spring concert on April 2 at 8 p.m. at the West Valley College theater, 14000 Fruitvale Ave., in Saratoga. The program includes spirited marches, popular music, Broadway show tunes and light classics.
The 100-member band, which consists of both amateur and professional musicians, has been under the direction of Craig Northrup since its inception in 1990. The band performs several concerts each year, as well as at many local civic events.

Hakone Gardens program focus is Japanese textiles
As part of the various classes, workshops and programs it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, presents a watercolor weekend workshop on April 6 and 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
The instructor is Jane Hofstetter, an award-winning South Bay artist as well as an art teacher. Friday's theme is kimono-clad figures among foliage and flowers. She will provide some reference photos, but participants are welcome to bring their own. Saturday's theme is the challenge of painting the ocean--or other bodies of moving water--along with rocks.
