Chapman tosses Warriors to win
Westmont wins four games in tourney
By Dick Sparrer
Both the Westmont and Del Mar softball teams were winners in league and tournament play last week. But when the two softball powers went head-to-head in a nonleague game on Tuesday afternoon, only one team could go home a winner. And last Tuesday it was Westmont.
The Warriors turned back the Dons 5-2 on a four-hitter by Lisa Chapman.
The win came a couple of days before the Warriors opened league play with a 3-0 victory over Piedmont Hills in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and a few days before they rolled to four straight wins to open the Circle of Champions Tournament at Twin Creeks.
The loss for the Dons came just a few days before they opened the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL with a 7-2 win over Willow Glen, and before they won three more times to clinch second place in the annual Charlie Miguel Tournament at Mission College.
The Warriors, 7-1-1 for the year, scored single runs in the first and sixth and unloaded for three runs in the fifth on the way to the 5-2 win over Del Mar in the nonleague game last week.
Chapman, who blanked the Dons for five innings before fiving up two runs in the sixth, struck out 12 in the game. She also helped herself at the plate with a pair of singles.
Jenny Brown, Jessica Davis and Jennifer Carothers supported with two hits each in the win for Westmont.
Tonya Honoré had two of Del Mar's four hits in the game.
Westmont came back later in the week to blank Piedmont Hills 3-0 on a two-hitter by Chapman. The right-hander fanned 13 in the win.
Leading a six-hit attack for the Warriors was Lisa Salmiery with a single and a double. Brittany Hennig also ripped a double in the win.
After the win in the league opener, the Warriors opened play in the Circle of Champions with four victories. Chapman tossed all four wins for Westmont, including three shutouts and a no-hitter.
The Warriors whipped Harbor 6-0 on a one-hit shutout by Chapman. The junior hurler stuck out nine.
Hennig drove in three of her club's six runs, and Jessica Cobillas and Salmiery each doubled.
Cobillas blasted a home run and Laura Phillippe singled and doubled to drive the Warriors to a 5-1 win over Mills. Salmiery ripped a triple, and Chapman fanned 10 in a three-hitter.
Chapman came back to toss a no-hitter in Westmont's 7-0 win over Leigh a game later. The talented hurler whiffed 16 in the win, and she also clubbed a double.
Salmiery doubled twice and singled for the Warriors and Phillippe singled twice and doubled. Brown had three hits and knocked in two runs, Davis singled and doubled, and Hennig and Carothers each had two hits.
Westmont made it four straight with a 2-0 win over Half Moon Bay. Chapman struck out 10 in a one-hit shutout. Davis had a triple among her three hits and Hennig doubled for the Warriors.
Dons 2nd at Miguel
Del Mar ended up second overall in the rugged Charlie Miguel tournament. The Dons won two games the first weekend, and came back last weekend with three straight victories before falling 2-0 to Gilroy in the championship game.
Shannon Kagel was named the most valuable pitcher of the tournament and Honoré and Darcy Houts were each selected to the all-tournament team.
Kagel tossed a seven-hitter to lead Del Mar to a 2-1 win over Notre Dame-Belmont in the semifinals.
Panthers in quarters
Prospect also made it to the quarterfinals of the Miguel tourney, only to lose a 5-4 heartbreaker to Soquel. The Knights went on to fall to eventual champ Gilroy 3-0 in the semifinals.
Hurler Cassie Gilford was named to the Miguel all-tournament team for her efforts for the Panthers.
Gilford had tossed a three-hitter to lead the Panthers to a 5-4 win over Los Altos to get Prospect into the quarter-final round. Gilbert, Amber Madsen and Stacey Farrell ripped two hits each in the win and Annie Gillespie tripled.
But Gillespie was tagged with a tough loss in Prospect's 5-4 defeat at the hands of Soquel. Farrell doubled for the Panthers.
Gilford fired a one-hit shutout and also doubled twice to drive in two runs to lead the Panthers to a rousing 26-0 win over San Jose in the first game of the year in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.
Gillespie tripled and singled three times to knock in two runs and Farrell and Jennifer Littlejohn each had four hits.
The Panthers had beaten Cupertino 11-8 earlier in the week in a nonleague game. Gillespie homered, doubled and singled to drive in three runs, and she was also the winning pitcher for the Panthers. Gilford came on to get the save, and she doubled twice and singled in the win.
Falcons fall
The Saratoga girls softball team lost its only game last week, falling 8-3 to Monte Vista Christian.
