Rec leaders needed for summer jobs

The city of Saratoga is hiring recreation leaders for this summer's upcoming summer camps.

Positions include Recreation Leaders I-III, and depend on experience, knowledge of the positions and abilities. Pay for the positions depends on leadership level, and ranges from $5.25 to $8.25 an hour.

To apply, pick up a city application from City Hall's administrative services department, located at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga. For more information, call 868-1200.

    Grants available from Saratoga

The city of Saratoga has announced upcoming public hearings and the availability of annual Community Development Block Grants for housing and community development projects.

Applications for grant money are available at City Hall through March 29, and public hearings for the money's allocation have been set for April 7.

The funds from the grant program are available for public works projects, senior citizen centers, housing rehabilitation and many other needs.

Usually, funding is provided for those projects benefiting people who fall into low- and very-low-income categories.

    County librarian honored by city

Santa Clara County Library Director Susan Fuller received a proclamation from Saratoga's City Council for a job well done and for being selected as Library Journal's 1998 National Librarian of the Year.

Fuller, who heads the county library system and is in charge of Saratoga's Community Library, said she owed her awards to those who work alongside her, and to the communities that help the libraries.

Fuller became library director in 1985.

Council backs Bear Creek land deal

Saratoga's City Council gave a pledge of support March 17 to the Greenbelt Alliance, an environmental group assisting the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District's pending purchase of the Bear Creek Redwoods.

The $30 million deal, if completed, would turn more than 1,000 acres of land near Lexington Reservoir into public open space.
