    Seeking former football all-stars

It was the summer of 1974 when a football game called the Santa Clara County All-Star Bowl debuted on the turf at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

Since that time, it has grown to become a summer classic for high school football all-stars, and the event, now known as the Charlie Wedemeyer All-Star Football Game, returns this summer for its 25th anniversary game.

To celebrate, game organizers--the Almaden Valley Rotary Club--invite all former players and coaches to attend this year's game, set for Friday, July 23, at Spartan Stadium.

For more information on the anniversary game, and for former players and coaches to reserve their place at the event, write to All-Star Events, P.O. Box 20933, San Jose (95160), or send a fax to 268-2960.

    Soccer Tryouts

The West Valley Youth Soccer League will hold boys under-13 class 3 (competitive) tryouts on March 23. For more information, call Hal Treat at 463-2426.

    Football Signups

It's time to start thinking about the fall Pop Warner Football season, and youngsters ages 8-15 living in Los Gatos, Saratoga and Campbell can sign up as either football players or cheerleaders.

Registration will be held on March 24, 6-9 p.m., at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos. Players must have been born between Aug. 1, 1983, and July 31, 1991, and 15-year-old players must be under 125 pounds.

Coaches for football and cheerleading are also needed.

For more information, e-mail MA48@prodigy.net or call 270-1443.

    Wedemeyer Gala

The Charlie Wedemeyer Celebration Gala, honoring outstanding Bay Area high school seniors, will be held May 20, 6 p.m., in the Imperial Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel.

Special guests for the evening event include Peggy Fleming, Jan Hutchins, Michael Nouri and John Ralston.

Scholarships of $1,000 each will be presented to college-bound athletes who have overcome adversity or challenge and who have demonstrated a positive attitude in helping others.

Call Pam Dunnett (867-2546), Reiko Iwanaga (867-4525), Roger F. Reedy (980-9555, ext. 28) or Carri Wedemeyer (358-4784).
