Westmont baseball team wins two

Soin nails three wins, and so does the Saratoga tennis team

    By Dick Sparrer

Freshman Ashvin Soin won three times in singles play last week to lead the Saratoga boys tennis team to three victories.

Soin nailed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to start the Falcons on the road to a 6-1 nonleague win over Mitty to open the week. He came back with a couple of victories at No. 2 singles to help the Falcons beat Fremont 7-0 and Palo Alto 4-3.

The most important win for the Falcons came over the Vikings. Saratoga posted lopsided nonleague wins over Mitty and Fremont, but the 4-3 victory over the Vikings came in a match in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Falcons are now 2-2 in the division and 7-3 for the year.

Soin won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles in the team win over Paly. Elong Chiu nailed a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles and Jason Hou pulled out a tight 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.

Scott Swanberg and Justin Sung teamed for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles to help clinch the team triumph.

Brian Doore rolled to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to put the Falcons on track in a 7-0 win over Fremont earlier in the week. Soin won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Chiu won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Alexander Sevastopoulos won 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 4.

Saratoga swept in doubles play with Amit Modi and Jimmy Chao combining for a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1, Swanberg and Sung winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Andy Tzou and Kenny Rhow winning by default at No. 3.

Saratoga opened the week with the 6-1 victory over Mitty. Soin, Hou and Sevastopoulos were singles winners and the doubles teams of Chao-Hsu, Swanberg-Sung and Tzou-Rhow each won.

    Softball team falls

The Saratoga girls softball team dropped a pair of decisions last week, falling 9-1 to Lynbrook in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and losing 4-3 to Gilroy in the first round of the Live Oak Tournament. Marisa Moore knocked in all three of her club's runs in the tough loss to the Mustangs.

The Falcons will host Monta Vista on March 23 and Homestead on March 25 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games as they gun for their first league victory.

    Volleyball losses

The Saratoga boys volleyball team lost twice in league play last week, falling 15-3, 15-9, 5-15, 15-5 to Los Gatos and losing 16-14, 15-6, 15-5 to Leland. The Falcons are now even at 3-3 in the tough Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
