Residents: Leave cartoonist alone!

Get a life, people! It's called free speech. DeCinzo cartoons are great.

Editorial missed the whole point

The editorial in the March 11 issue of the Saratoga News criticizing the City Council's ruling on Barry Swenson's proposed development and change of zoning deserves some comment.

Barry Swenson is a developer, and most developers, in my opinion, are interested first in profits and last (if at all) in the interests of affected citizens. His move to go directly to a referendum, without spelling out what his proposed development will look like and its effect on its surroundings, could appear to be an end run to confuse the voters.

There is no way I would vote for his proposed zoning change without knowing more about his plan, and it is probable that many other Saratoga voters feel as I do. For the previous (and only) zone change referendum--Binkley's request to move the property line between two lots in order to enlarge the smaller one--the result of the change was made pretty clear before the election. If Swenson already owns the land and plans to put something on it, he would do well to learn from the Planning Department, the Planning Commission and neighbors of his land what would be acceptable in that location before he goes to a yes-or-no vote on it. I think it is in the best interests of Swenson as well as the city that the council asked to have some plans available before calling for a referendum.
