Poetry contest is scheduled

Prospect High School's Spanish and French departments are holding poetry contests in which students from area schools will memorize poems by Spanish and French authors, then present them in front of a panel of judges and an audience of friends, parents and teachers. Students will compete on six levels corresponding to the number of years of language classes they've taken. Level six is for native speakers.

Students will be judged on pronunciation and delivery, including emotion, gestures and poise. The first through third places at each level receive awards, and each entrant will also go home with a certificate of participation.

In the Spanish contest, schools will compete with one another, vying for a plaque to remain with the winner for the year. Each school may enter two students maximum per level. Teachers wishing to enter their students should fax the names of the students, their levels in Spanish or French and the titles and authors of the poems they'll read to 973-1759. The Spanish registration deadline is March 25, and the French deadline is April 1. The Spanish contest will take place at Prospect on March 31 at 3:30 p.m. in room 32. The French contest will be in the same location on April 7, also at 3:30 p.m.
