Saratogan invested as Knight of Malta
Victor B. Bari of Saratoga, a professor of modern languages at Santa Clara University, will be invested as a Knight of Malta in a ceremony at Woodside Priory in Portola Valley on Saturday, April 5. He will join more than 11,000 members of the Order of Malta, a nearly 900-year-old order of the Roman Catholic Church.
Vari has served on the faculty of Santa Clara University more than 50 years and currently serves as the Toso chairman of Italian studies. He was instrumental in the founding of Casa Italiana, the university's Italian-theme residence hall.
In 1982 he was knighted by the Italian government, and in 1991 he received the rank of comendatore, one of the highest civilian distinctions awarded by the president of Italy.
The investiture takes place at 10:30 a.m., following a rosary and mass at 9:30 am. The priory is located at 302 Portola Road, Portola Valley.
Saratoga artist shows works in Sacramento
Saratoga artist Maxine Solomon is showing 11 oil paintings at the Matrix Gallery in Sacramento in a show titled No borders, No Boundaries. Many of the paintings were inspired by her recent experiences while working in Africa.
In her layered style of painting, she seems to say that the many layers of her works, each affecting the next, create the final image in the same way that experiences compound in people to create the entire person.
The paintings will be on view until April 4 at the Matrix Gallery, 1518 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento.
Friends will hear bookstore owners
The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries will hear Rachel Cart and Ian Oeschger, owners of the Saratoga Book Mart, speak when the group meets at 10 a.m. April 7 in the community room of the Saratoga Library, at Fruitvale and Saratoga avenues.
The two will discuss what it takes to run a small bookstore. Some of their books will be on display.
School library volunteers will be honored, and there will be an election of officers. Lunch will follow.
