    Redwood wins in Mathcounts

    Redwood Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders captured the school's first first-place team trophy at the Santa Clara Valley Chapter Mathcounts competition.

    The team included student competitors Darren Yin, Anderthan Hsieh, Andrew Chien and David Lee and coaches Ming Hsieh and Thomas Yin.

    D. Yin placed first in the individual competition with a perfect score. Chien placed second, A. Hsieh tied for fourth and Lee placed 14th.

    A. Hsieh and Chien also placed second and third, respectively, in the countdown portion of the contest.

    Sacred Heart School won awards for being the best small school and most improved school.

    Redwood advanced to the Northern California competition, held March 16 at UC -Davis.

    Saratogan gets college degree

    Robin Lynne Heinrich of Saratoga earned a bachelor of arts degree in technical journalism when she graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., in the fall of 2001.

    The university awarded diplomas to 1,144 undergraduate students, 203 graduate students and 48 doctoral students at the school on Dec. 14 and 15. Twenty of the students were from California.

    WVC honors its faculty members

    West Valley College held its first official recognition ceremony for faculty members on Feb. 12. The college presented awards in five categories to eight faculty members for their contributions to students and the teaching profession.

    Steve Blasberg won the award for publication or presentation excellence, while Al Mingione received the associate faculty teaching excellence award. The college recognized Diane Tsutsumi for service to community excellence and Kim Aufhauser for teaching excellence.

    The four other faculty members--Julie Maia, Veronese Anderson, Joan Sarlo and Jim Wilczak--won awards for service to the college experience. Awards to Anderson, Sarlo and Wilczak were for lifetime achievement.
