Community band performs concert

The Saratoga Community Band performs a concert of overtures, marches, jazz and popular tunes at 8 p.m. April 15 at the West Valley College Theater. Admission is free.

The band is under direction of Craig Northrup, former Saratoga High School band director and music director of the Vienna International Music Festival in Austria. The band started in 1990 with 35 members and now numbers 83 musicians of all ages.

The band is sponsored by the West Valley Music Department and Community Education and is open to all interested musicians in the area. It rehearses each Monday at 7:15 p.m. at the West Valley College Music Department.

Saratoga Rotary awards grants

The Saratoga Rotary Club aids community groups by allocating grant money raised at the club's annual Rotary Art Show and other activities throughout the year.

The club recently awarded grants to the following organizations: West Valley College ($2,536), San Jose Emergency Housing Consortium ($3,200), San Jose Cleveland Ballet ($2,500), HOPE Rehabilitation Services ($2,000), Saratoga High Grad Night Committee ($3,000), The Nonprofit Development Center ($1,500), Adult and Child Guidance Center ($2,500) and Villa Montalvo ($2,000).

Organizations interested in pursuing a grant may send for an application and guidelines from the Saratoga Rotary Service Fund, P.O. Box 2353, Saratoga, 95070.

AAUW holds annual tea and silent auction

The Los Gatos-Saratoga branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its eighth annual English Tea with Silent Auction, a benefit for homeless women and children, on April 13 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m at the Sacred Heart Church Geary Hall, 13724 Saratoga Ave. The Fabulous Flappers, a dance troupe, will provide entertainment.

AAUW gives financial and volunteer support to the Georgia Travis Center, a drop-in center for at-risk women and children, located at 66 E. Rosemary St., San Jose.

Montalvo service group adds members for its 1996 provisional class

The Montalvo Service Group has added several members for its 1996 provisional class. They are now being trained as volunteers for the Montalvo gallery and gift shop, concerts, workshops, luncheons and other activities. Among the new members are Saratogans Mary Ann Leach, Barbara Major, Corinne Rathjens and Betty Shawareb. Their duties include working at the upcoming summer luncheons, to be offered June 19 through Aug. 28, and Yuletide at Montalvo, slated for Nov. 15 through 17.
