Library Friends hosts a seller of antiquarian books
The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries holds its annual meeting and election of officers and board members for 2001-02 on April 2, in the Community Room of the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave.
The group also has planned a presentation by Roger A. Wicker, an antiquarian bookseller and owner of Turtle Island Bookshop in Berkeley. Both his store and neighborhood will be featured in Sunset magazine's May issue.
The theme of Wicker's talk at the Friends' meeting is the impact of the Internet on the buying and selling of rare and out-of-print books. Another connection Wicker has to the Friends is his job as manuscript editor for Saratogan Willys Peck's upcoming A History of the Saratoga Libraries.
Wicker earned a bachelor's degree from Drury College in Missouri and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina. He began his career as a journalist, and, later, as a copy editor and wire editor for the Ashville Citizen-Times in Ashville, N.C.
In 1970, Wicker began his career as a bookseller. By 1976, he devoted himself full time to selling rare and out-of-print books. He belongs to the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the Book Club of California, and is experienced in book-binding and book restoration.
The Friends of the Saratoga Library will serve a potluck dinner at 6 p.m.; members should bring a dish; guests are welcome and need only bring themselves. Following the dinner is the brief business meeting and election, after which Wicker will give his presentation.
