Chapman tosses Westmont to two softball wins

    By Dick Sparrer

Lisa Chapman tossed the Westmont girls softball team to back-to-back league wins last week, but the Warriors lost a 2-0 heartbreaker to Sacred Heart Prep in the Circle of Champions tournament on Saturday.

Chapman fired a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Presentation to open the week, then beat Leigh 2-1 on a two-hitter in eight innings. Chapman struck out 10 in each game.

The two wins helped the Warriors improve to 3-0 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Bonnie Huggett doubled for the Warriors in the win over the Panthers, and she singled and drove in both Westmont runs in the win over Leigh. Brittany Hennig also had two hits against the Longhorns.

Westmont dropped to 9-3-1 for the year with the tourney loss to Sacred Heart Prep. Chapman's record slipped to 9-1. Jessica Davis had a double in the game for the Warriors.

In other local action last week, Prospect won three times in the West Valley Division, beating Mount Pleasant 1-0 on a combined three-hitter by Annie Gillespie and Cassie Gilford, crushing Overfelt 20-4 and blanking Lincoln 13-0.

Gillespie was the winning pitcher, striking out seven, and also doubled home the winning run in the 1-0 win over the Cardinals. Gilford came on to pick up the save, fanning three.

The Panthers rolled past Overfelt 20-4. Gilford was the winning pitcher and also tripled and doubled twice to drive in three runs.

Gillespie doubled and singled twice to plate three runs and Annie Kalbrier had two hits to knock in three runs. Amber Madsen and Cindy Farrell each doubled.

Prospect, 3-0 in the division and 9-3 for the year, handled Lincoln 13-0 on a one-hit shutout by Gillespie, who also helped her cause with a couple of singles.

Jennifer Littlejohn singled and tripled in the win and Farrell singled and doubled to knock in three runs.

Saratoga two-timed Homestead for a couple of wins in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.

The Falcons blanked the Mustangs 3-0 to open the week, then edged Homestead 6-5 a couple of days later. The two wins helped Saratoga get off to a 2-0 start in the division and improve its season record to 5-5.

Sophomore hurler Bonnie Craven tossed a three-hit shutout in Saratoga's 3-0 win over Homestead. Craven, Jennifer King and Joanne Sprague ripped two hits each for the winners and Ilana Sabes blasted a double.

The Falcons staked Craven to the early lead with a run in the first, and that would turn out to be the only run the Saratoga hurler really needed. But the Falcons added two insurance runs in the second, and rolled from there to the 3-0 win as Craven threw seven goose eggs at the Mustangs.

The game was much closer late in the week, but the Falcons pulled out a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind win over Homestead.

The Falcons scored again in the first, but this time the Mustangs answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Homestead scored two more runs in the fourth to lead 4-1.

Saratoga cut the lead by one with a run in the sixth, though, then unloaded for four in the seventh. Homestead scored in the bottom of the seventh, but ended up a run short.

Sabes was the winning pitcher for the Falcons, pushing her season record to 4-3. She also helped her own cause with a pair of singles.

Samantha Perry had two hits for the Falcons in the win and King roped a triple.

    Westmont wins two

The Westmont boys volleyball team maintained its winning ways in league play with back-to-back wins last week, beating Piedmont Hills and Lincoln in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Warriors turned back the Pirates 15-6, 16-14, 15-2 and tamed the Lions 15-8, 15-7, 15-3 to improve to 5-0 in the division and to 6-0 for the year.

Prospect, meanwhile, slipped to 4-4 for the year with a split last week. The Panthers beat San Jose 15-7, 15-2, 18-16 in a nonleague match, but lost to Pioneer 15-11, 15-6, 1-15, 15-13 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL.

Over in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, Saratoga lost is opener to Los Gatos. The Falcons fell to the Wildcats 15-8, 17-15, 15-9.

    Panthers split

The Prospect boys tennis team split a pair of league matches last week while the Saratoga and Westmont squads each lost twice.

Nevin Morris won at No. 1 singles to start the Panthers on their way to a tight 4-3 win over Silver Creek in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Panthers are 2-4 in division play and 3-5 for the year.

Abraham Jama nailed a tight 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles and Nick Williams won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4. Tim Ogawa and Brian Roh teamed for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles to help the Panthers pull out the win.

Prospect had lost 6-1 to Valley Christian to open the week. Donald Gagliasso and Russel Ortiz posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles for Prospect's only win of the match.

Saratoga dropped a 6-1 decision to powerful Monta Vista in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL. Junior Justin Sung posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles to break up Monta Vista's bid for a shut out.

The Falcons lost 6-1 to Los Altos later in the week.

Saratoga slipped to 5-2 for the year and to 2-2 in the division with the two losses.

Westmont lost a tough 4-3 nod to Oak Grove after a 7-0 loss to Piedmont Hills to open the week. The Warriors are 0-6 in the Mount Hamilton Division of the BVAL.
