Orchard Heritage
There's still a bright spot left in the city of Saratoga that offers a remembrance of things past.
There was a time when children could frolic every spring among the mustard and spring blossoms in the orchards of Saratoga. These days, youngsters have the Heritage Orchard for a hint of what it must have been like when the city was a part of the Valley of Heart's Delight. Last week, 2-year-old Charlotte Bony of Los Gatos helped welcome spring by strolling through the orchard with her mother, Sheila Bony. To encourage a week of springtime among the blossoms, Matt Novakovich, who maintains the orchard and harvests the fruit, mowed a path under the trees and put out the welcome mat from March 18 through 24.

Tribute to Gentleman Jim
Patty Brownell, daughter of former mayor Jim Shaw, and her son James, read the plaque posted in front of the coastal live oak planted in memory of her father. The tree was planted near the south corner of the administration building at City Hall. Dedication ceremonies took place March 24. Mayor Stan Bogosian and Councilman Evan Baker spoke. Shaw died in August 1999 while he was mayor.

Lessons in Life
Cub Scouts Connor Skelly (left) and Hank Cimamon use mannequins to learn how to check to see whether victims are breathing. It was par for the course when members of Cub Scout Pack 549 took CPR training recently at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church.
