'The Campbell Reporter' joins a family of community papers
By Dale Bryant
Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, a division of Metro Newspapers, launched its sixth community newspaper on March 24. The Campbell Reporter was delivered to 18,000 homes and businesses in that city.
Editor of the new publication is Eric Johnson, who in November was named general manager of Metro's community newspapers. As general manager, Johnson is charged with defining the community group as a distinct entity under the name Silicon Valley Community Newspapers.
"Although the company began publishing community newspapers in 1990, we continue to have a strong identity as a publisher of alternative weeklies," David Cohen, publisher of Metro Newspapers, says. "Because these newspapers have grown and become integral parts of their respective communities, we believed it was important to create an identity that was more descriptive of their function."
Newspapers that make up the Silicon Valley Community Newspapers are the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, the Saratoga News, the Cupertino Courier, the Sunnyvale Sun, the Willow Glen Resident and The Campbell Reporter.
Johnson worked as news editor of Metro and Metro Santa Cruz before being named general manager of SVCN. He is the former owner of two weekly newspapers in Montana. Johnson says Campbell was a logical choice for the company's new publication. "There's a lot of activity in the city's cultural life," he says. "Downtown is expanding and business is booming. Local officials are aggressively pursuing a vision of what they want the city to be."
The community newspapers now under the banner of the Silicon Valley Community Newspapers have traditionally played a key role in helping communities grow and define themselves, Johnson points out.
