Saratoga NewsFalcons win a close one, then rip Mountain ViewBy Dick Sparrer Winning close games can be fun and exciting. But the Saratoga baseball team decided that one close game was enough excitement for one week. Saratoga had scored a run in the home half of the seventh to pull out a 3-2 thriller over Lynbrook to open play last week. But when the Falcons found themselves holding just a tight 2-1 lead over Mountain View later in the week, they seemed to say to themselves, "Enough is enough!" Because the Falcons turned that close game into a runaway when they exploded for seven runs in the fourth to coast to a 12-2 win over the Spartans. Michael Drew was the winning pitcher and helped his own cause with a couple of hits in the win over Mountain View. Drew evened his mound record at 2-2 with the win as the Falcons held the Spartans to just two hits in the game. Drew, Derek Cartmell and Erick Raich ripped two hits each to lead the Falcons to the victory, but the big hit of the day was a three-run triple by junior Ryan Bernard. Cartmell singled and tripled in the win, and Raich singled and doubled. Earlier in the week, Bernard singled and doubled to drive in two runs, and Troy Cardin doubled to lead the Falcons to a tight 3-2 win over Lynbrook. Brian Cavanaugh picked up the mound win when Saratoga picked up a run in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie. Falcons fall The Saratoga girls' softball team dropped a heartbreaker last week, falling 8-7 to Milpitas in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL. The Falcons were cruising along with a 4-0 lead when the Trojans unloaded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Saratoga fought back for three in the fifth but could get no closer. Marisa Moore slapped a triple, and Joanne Sprague had two hits to drive in a couple of runs for the Falcons in the loss. Earlier, in nonleague action, Saratoga pounded Prospect 10-0 on the strength of a four-hit shutout by Shelly Lawson. Moore doubled twice in the win for the Falcons, and Sprague, Besty Masiello and Lawson supported with two hits each. Saratoga had dropped a tight 10-8 nonleague decision to Los Altos earlier that week. Moore and Masiello each singled and doubled, but the Falcons were victims of a seven-run Los Altos rally in the fourth that proved the difference in the game. Saratoga had won just one of three games early in the season at the Los Altos Tournament. Lawson fired a four-hitter, and Masiello singled and doubled to drive in four runs in a 9-2 win over Kennedy. But the Falcons lost 3-2 to a tough Notre Dame of Belmont squad, and they fell 7-4 to Salinas despite getting two hits each from Masiello, Sprague, Karen Lewis and Ashley Babb. Warriors lose Westmont lost a tough 8-4 decision to Santa Teresa in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the BVAL. Brittany Hennig and Jessica Davis ripped two hits apiece for the Warriors. Diana Mazenko belted a triple, and Lauren Lueder cracked a double. The loss came in Westmont's league opener. The Warriors are now 6-7 for the year.
