West Valley College instructor Bill Whitney leads a discussion on contemporary issues at The Terraces each week.

The Terraces invites seniors to participate in April 2 seminar

West Valley College professor William Whitney offers discussion on and insight into the June primary election and ballot initiatives April 2 at a seminar for local seniors at The Terraces, 800 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos. The program is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Whitney, a political science instructor for the past 20 years, likes to share his expertise in American government with seniors.

"Unless people read the newspapers on a regular basis, they may not find out about many issues, Whitney says. "In my discussions, we look at city, state and federal government issues that affect local seniors and the community. I do some interpretation and explanations that provide added dimension to the topic."

The contemporary-issues classes are part of both The Terraces community relations program and the Older Adult Program at WVC in Saratoga. The classes take place every Thursday afternoon.

"We use our expertise to interact with the community and inform local residents. It helps to bridge the gap in all aspects of society," Whitney says.

This program and many others at The Terraces, a continuing-care retirement community, are open to the public.

"We want to reach out to seniors in the community," says Pamela Bancroft, director of marketing at The Terraces. "Our classes provide an important resource for local seniors. They have an opportunity to join a program that is both fun and enlightening."

Among the programs open to the public are bridge and computer support--geared toward the older adult population.

In addition to the upcoming discussion on the June primary, the contemporary-issues classes explore such issues as the United States' relationship with Europe, trade policy, military issues, the effect of drugs on society, the tobacco industry and the relationship between Israel and Palestine.
