Friends of Libraries stage book auction

Friends of the Saratoga Libraries will hold an auction of rare and special books, including books by J. D. Salinger, Ernest Hemingway and Willa Cather, as well as art, children's, Civil War and antiquarian books.

Auctioneer Dave McLaughlin of the Library Commission will open the verbal auction on Thursday, April 10, at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave.

Books are available for preview, and silent bids will be taken through April 6 at the Book-Go-Round, 14410 Oak Street.

There will also be a paperback book sale at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave., on April 9, 6-9 p.m.; April 10-13, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and April 14, noon to 4 p.m. Books will be $2 per bag on April 14.

Saratoga band performs concert

The Saratoga Community Band will give a concert on April 14 at 8 p.m. at the West Valley College Theater, 1400 Fruitvale Ave.

The band is under the direction of Craig Northrup, former Saratoga High School band director and music director of the Vienna International Music Festival in Austria. The band first started in 1990 with 35 members and now has more than 90 members, including musicians of all ages.

The program will feature soprano soloist Susan Parks, former star of Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco, who will sing a medley of songs from the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly. In addition, the band will perform famous overtures and marches, jazz and popular tunes.

The band is sponsored by the West Valley Music Department and Community Education and is open to area musicians. The band rehearses weekly on Monday evenings at 7:15 at West Valley College's Music Department.

Travels in Spain Sierra Club topic

Werner Barasch will narrate a slide show of his 1996 travels in Spain at the general meeting of the Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter/Guadalupe Group at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, in the Saratoga Library, Fruitdale and Saratoga avenues. His topic is "Three Jewels of Andalusia: Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla."
