Rickgauer stars for Falcons

By Dick Sparrer

Peter Rickgauer was one better than his Saratoga teammates last week.

The junior won three tennis matches last week, but the Falcons could win only two. Still, the Falcons won when it counted the most. They beat Gunn 5-2 and edged Los Altos 4-3 in league matches, but lost 6-1 in a nonleague match against Leland.

The two wins helped the Falcons improve to 5-2 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Saratoga is 9-5 for the year.

Rickgauer was the only Saratoga player to win in all three matches, and all three were thrillers.

Rickgauer's three-set victory helped the Falcons pull out the tight 4-3 win over Los Altos. He won the first set 6-1, but lost in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) in the second set. He came back to win the third set 6-1, though, to claim the win at No. 3 singles.

Daniel Modi came through with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Neil Godbole won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles against the Eagles. Michale Goss and David Chao added a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Rickgauer posted a 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles to help the Falcons to the 5-2 win over Gunn. Modi was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles, Elong Chiu won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and Brian Doore won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Goss and Chao added a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Rickgauer's 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles was Saratoga's only victory in the 6-1 loss to Leland.

Falcons net win

David Chao won 15-4, 15-3 in the boys' No. 1 singles spot to lead the Saratoga badminton team to a 13-2 win over Los Gatos last week. The Falcons improved to 5-0 for the year and 4-0 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL with the win.

Brian Chen and Jason Tong teamed for a 15-7, 15-10 boys' No. 1 doubles win, and Jean Lin and Alinna Chiu won 15-2, 15-0 in the girls' No. 1 position. Nathan Wang and Olivia Chung posted an 18-17, 15-3 win in mixed doubles.

Golfers win two

Jeff Kang fired a sic-over-par 40 to lead the Saratoga golf team to a 228-232 win over Santa Clara at the Saratoga Country Club last week.

Jonathan Grellas was close behind with a 41. Joonsik Maing fired a 43 for the Falcons, and Jacob Vigil shot a 51.

Kang carded a 41 later in the week to lead the Falcons to a 224-238 win over Los Altos on the same course. Saratoga is now 4-2 for the year.

Volleyball loss

The Saratoga boys' volleyball team dropped a 15-6, 15-5, 15-1 decision to Fremont in nonleague action last week.
